Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the easiest places in Kenya to combine strong wildlife viewing, birding and Rift Valley scenery in a relatively compact area. The park surrounds a shallow alkaline lake and includes grassland, acacia woodland, rocky slopes and escarpment viewpoints, creating a varied safari experience without very long driving distances.

The park is especially important for rhino conservation. Both black and white rhinos are present, with white rhinos often seen grazing in more open areas. Rothschild's giraffe, buffalo, hippo and numerous antelope species add to the wildlife mix. Lions and leopards also occur, although sightings depend on conditions and luck. Elephants are absent, which gives the park a different character from many other major Kenya safari destinations.

Birding remains a major attraction. Pelicans, flamingos and many other waterbirds use the lake depending on water levels and food availability, while surrounding woodland supports a broad range of additional species. Scenic stops can include Makalia Falls and elevated lookouts across the lake and escarpment. Lake Nakuru fits easily into routes linking central Kenya with the Masai Mara, and it is featured in many of our Kenya safari packages.

Planning your visit

June to February is generally favourable for wildlife viewing and road conditions, although the park can be rewarding throughout the year. Lake levels can change significantly and may affect bird distribution or access to some tracks.
