About this safari
Safari Overview: What Is the 2-Day Samburu National Reserve Safari?
Journey into Kenya's wild north on this 2-day Samburu National Reserve safari. Here, red earth, doum palms and distant mountains replace the green plains of the south. As a result, Samburu feels like a different Kenya altogether. This short trip suits travellers with limited time, couples, photographers and anyone looking beyond the usual routes.

Samburu National Reserve covers about 165 km² of semi-arid country, roughly 350 km north of Nairobi. Its lifeline is the Ewaso Ng'iro River, which draws elephants and buffaloes to its banks. Meanwhile, doum palms and acacia forest along the river give leopards plenty of cover.
The reserve is famous for the Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk. Lions and cheetahs also hunt here, and over 350 bird species have been recorded. Beyond the wildlife, the region is home to the Samburu people, known for their vibrant beadwork and pastoral traditions.

Best Time to Visit Samburu
Samburu is a year-round destination. However, the dry months bring the best game viewing, as animals crowd the river.
- June to October: peak season, with wildlife gathered along the Ewaso Ng'iro.
- January to February: hot, dry days and excellent sightings.
- November to December: short rains, fresh greenery and migrant birds.
- March to May: long rains, quieter roads and lower rates.
Pack light layers, since mornings are cool and afternoons are hot.
