The palm-lined Galana River runs through the park, drawing hippos, crocodiles and thirsty herds. Kenya Wildlife Service calls Tsavo East the "Theatre of the Wild".
The park's stars are its elephants, coloured red by dust baths in the volcanic soil. You can also see lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and dry-country antelopes such as lesser kudu. Over 500 bird species have been recorded here. Highlights include Mudanda Rock, a 1.6 km outcrop above a natural dam, and Lugard Falls.

- March to May: long rains and lower rates; April is wettest.

The drive to Bachuma Gate takes about 3 hours, depending on traffic. From Diani, allow an extra hour.
Is 2 days enough for Tsavo East?
Yes, for a first safari from the coast. You get four game drives and a night inside the park. For more time, we can add a second night.
Can you pick me up from Diani or Watamu?
Yes. We collect guests from hotels in Mombasa, Diani, Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu. Pickups from Watamu or Malindi are possible at an extra cost.
