Destinations: Amboseli vs Tsavo East National Park
Amboseli National Park (392 km²) lies below Mount Kilimanjaro on the Tanzanian border and became a national park in 1974. Spring-fed swamps draw some of Africa's most approachable elephant herds, along with lion, cheetah, buffalo, hippo and over 400 bird species.
Tsavo East National Park (about 13,747 km²) is one of Kenya's largest parks. Its red-earth plains and the palm-lined Galana River are home to red-dusted elephants, lion, lesser kudu and gerenuk. Kenya Wildlife Service calls it the "Theatre of the Wild", and highlights include Mudanda Rock and Lugard Falls.

Best Time to Visit Amboseli and Tsavo East
The best time is the dry season, June to October and January to February, when wildlife gathers near water. Both parks are rewarding year-round.
- June to October: peak game viewing; book early.
- November to December: short rains, green scenery and migrant birds.
- January to February: clear mornings and the best Kilimanjaro views.
- March to May: long rains, lush landscapes and lower rates.
Kilimanjaro is clearest at sunrise, so Amboseli drives start early.
Tour Highlights: What Will You See?
- Photograph Amboseli's elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, rising behind them.
- Look for lions, cheetahs, buffaloes, Masai giraffes, zebras and wildebeest on Amboseli's open plains.
