Stay at Segera Retreat in Laikipia, Kenya, a private luxury lodge with six villas, game drives, walks and African art. Learn about rates, the best time to visit and how to get there.
Segera Retreat is a luxury safari lodge located within Segera Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau in Kenya, in the grassland foothills of Mount Kenya. It has just six private villas on a 50,000 acre estate. Guests get open sided game drives, guided walks, night drives and a large art collection. All meals, selected drinks and activities are included. It suits couples, families and anyone who wants a quiet, private safari.
Segera Retreat sits within Segera Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau. This is open grassland and acacia country with Mount Kenya on the horizon. The conservancy covers about 50,000 acres. You share it with very few other guests.
Laikipia is known for strong wildlife numbers, and it is a good alternative to the busier parks. Sources describe it as having the second highest wildlife density in Kenya. It is also malaria free at this altitude, according to one listing, though you should always check with your doctor.
The retreat is linked to the vision of Jochen Zeitz, founder of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town. That is why art sits at the heart of a stay here. Sculptures stand in the gardens, and African art fills the public spaces.
Segera works to a "4Cs" idea: Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce. In practice, that means working with neighbouring communities, managing grazing so that livestock and wildlife can share the land, and powering the lodge with solar energy.
Segera has six thatched timber villas. They are raised above the gardens and look out across the plains. Most have a private deck, and some sources mention a sunken Jacuzzi on the deck. Villa 5 sits inside the sculpture garden instead of facing the savannah.
A personal attendant looks after each villa. Meals can be served poolside, or as a candlelit dinner on your own deck.
For families and groups, Segera also offers private houses. These have extra bedrooms, a chef and their own space. Listings differ on the exact number of villas and houses, so we confirm the current set up when we quote.
Villas: Best for couples and small families
Private houses: Best for multi generational trips and friends travelling together
Family set up: Family villas and babysitting are available, according to one listing
You plan your days with a personal host. The mix usually includes wildlife, culture and art.
Game drives: Open sided vehicles with a guide, including night drives
Art drives and art walks: Pair wildlife viewing with the sculpture and art collection
Guided walks: Slow, close up time in the bush
Camel rides: A full day camel safari is listed as included
Villa sleep outs: Sleep under the stars
Birding: Up to about 150 species on the estate
Community and culture: Visits to a local homestead and community projects
Extras on request: Bi plane or scenic flights, picnics and stable visits are listed
Wildlife on and around the conservancy includes lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Lelwel's hartebeest and African wild dog. Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe are two of Kenya's Special Five animals, so Segera is a good northern Kenya stop for them.
A visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is listed as a nearby add on for longer Laikipia trips.
Dining. Everything is included: all meals and drinks from a selected wine list. Reserve wines, champagne and premium spirits are usually extra. Chefs blend international dishes with Kenyan ingredients. They can adjust menus and timings for children.
Wellness. Segera has a spa, a gym, a central swimming pool and a steam tower. Treatments are given by a therapist on site. After a morning game drive, it is an easy way to slow down.
Art. Art is part of daily life here. The lodge displays work by African artists drawn from the Zeitz collection, and sculptures sit in the gardens. Listings also mention an artist in residence programme. Art drives and art walks let you combine the two passions.
Segera is open all year. The dry season, roughly June to September, brings mostly sunny days and cold nights. Animals gather near water and are easier to spot. The wettest months are the Long Rains from March to May, with April the wettest, and the Short Rains in October and November.
Pack warm layers. Mornings and evenings on the plateau can be cold, even in the dry season.
| Months | What to expect |

| March to May | Long rains. Green, quiet and cheaper. |
| June to September | Dry, sunny days and cold nights. Peak season. |
| October to November | Short rains. Fresh and green. |
| December | Dry again. Busy over the holidays. |
